Digital cameras and camera phones were hot holiday gifts. But what to do with those digital photos now accumulating on hard drives? A newly launched product called MyPhotoServer offers a unique, user-friendly solution. MyPhotoServer is the latest product from CanWeb Internet Services Ltd., a Sarnia information technology company producing Internet products.
With the MyPhotoServer software, everyone from novices to technophiles can create a virtual gallery that displays digital photographs to friends and family.
MyPhotoServer online photo-sharing software allows users to view and share digital photos online -- accessible from anywhere in the world through your own PC.
Its unique feature allows access to photos by whomever the user chooses, without having to e-mail the photos or load them on a website.
"We think this will be a great way for all those new digital photographers to share their holiday pictures," said David Grant, CanWeb president. "We knew we had the product on the right track when my 10-year-old started using it to share her camp pictures with her friends."
The user creates searchable online photo albums. Multiple albums and sub-albums can be created. The software also has basic editing features, allowing you to resize and rotate the digital images.
The digital pictures can be organized by subject, date, location or event. Captions and keywords can be added. A thumbnail index of each album is automatically created for easy visual scanning of the album's entire contents.
The package comes with a personalized web address that provides online access to the photo albums you have created -- that is, yourname.myphotoserver.com.
Viewers can then connect to the Internet anywhere in the world, type in the web address and view the online photo albums. MyPhotoServer allows you to control the privacy level of each album to prevent unauthorized access. Users can classify albums as private and designate which guests are permitted access with user names and passwords.
Albums can be changed any time. Removing a photo from the album does not delete the image from the PC's hard drive. MyPhotoServer does not actually store copies of the photos -- it simply provides a link to the existing photo saved to the PC's hard drive.
Compared to traditional methods of managing digital photos, MyPhotoServer saves the hassle of sending photos via e-mail. It also removes concerns about viruses, mailbox quotas, opening attachments and storing photos.
Applications for MyPhotoServer extend beyond home use and include work and community-related projects.
CanWeb is an example of a local company excelling in the field of software development, offering sophisticated Internet products. It has continued to expand into international markets since its inception in 1995 and now serves customers in more than 100 countries.
CanWeb also provides DynIP DNS management that is included with Symantec's PCAnywhere product.
