United Way announces new and improved website

For Immediate Release
September 2001

Just in time for the fall campaign, the United Way of Sarnia-Lambton unveiled its new website today.

The website, located at www.theunitedway.on.ca, features a multitude of information as well as up to the minute campaign progress. The campaign will have two thermometers illustrating the campaign achievement relative to both the Dollar goal and Donor goal of this year’s drive.

Executive Director, Dave Brown said the new improvements to this new site make it perhaps the most interactive and dynamic website of any United Way. “Very few United Ways anywhere show up to the minute campaign progress; ours is in both text and graphic form,” Brown explained. Brown said that campaign progress will be updated at least every day, and whenever the United Way receives a significant pledge.

“Now, employees and corporations can immediately see the result of their donation on the overall campaign progress” he said.

Other additions include a search function that would allow visitors to search any key word topic they choose and search the entire United Way of Sarnia-Lambton site.

In addition, all United Way of Sarnia-Lambton news releases are posted to the site, as well as “donor forms”, “comment forms”, and even applications for community groups requesting funding will be available for download.

Perhaps the most innovative content to the website is the capability to view the 6 ½ minute United Way video sponsored again by NOVA Chemicals. “By the end of next week, we will have a link to ifilm.com who is hosting the video”. Brown explained that the video could be “streamed” to any computer with an Internet connection, although the quality will be better with a high-speed connection.

Brown said that ifilm.com is hosting the video at no charge and the entire site was designed and is being hosted by CanWeb Internet Services Ltd. as part of their corporate support. Brown said that CanWeb employees were excellent to work with and without their support and expertise, the site would not be possible.

Brown added that the primary purpose of the site is to give Lambton County residents information on the United Way, its funded agencies, and its vision. “We want people to know all they want to know about the United Way of Sarnia-Lambton on a 24/7 basis.” Brown said although there is a “donor form”, the site really is designed to provide information in an easy to navigate format.

CanWeb is a Sarnia based company whose core business is its DynIP Software. Business users of DynIP can achieve significant savings over conventional business IP addressing with all of the flexibility and control.
CanWeb has Business customers from over 70 countries world-wide. CanWeb also provides such services as: e-Business solutions, Site Hosting, and Database Integration. www.canweb.com.

Ifilm.com is the world leader in streaming video content on the Internet. Its content includes independent films from individuals as well as filmmakers from around the world. Examples of content include 30-second spoofs of commercials to feature length amateur films. www.ifilm.com. Brown indicated that this is a first for the Hollywood, California company to host a charitable promotional video of this kind. “We are very excited about the support we are receiving from Ifilm.com.” he said
